Frans Hals Museum
Frans Hals Museum

Established in 1862, the Frans Hals Museum is located in Haarlem in the Netherlands. It has a vast collection of works, including Hals’ works; artworks from the collections of former guilds, monasteries, and churches of Haarlem; and Haarlem-related objects acquired from local purchases and donations. The museum’s website doesn't include the three criteria we discussed in the previous section. Nonetheless, it's still worth mentioning because it has a unique and remarkable user interface and user experience that earn it a place among the other website designs we evaluate in this article. The page has a slider menu that facilitates easy navigation of the site’s contents. The page’s parallax scrolling and fluid animations invite you to explore the page. Lastly, the page has a demonstration video that gives visitors some information about the museum and invites them to “discover the gem.”

Mikiya Kobayashi
Mikiya Kobayashi

Mikiya Kobayashi's website has a clean and minimalistic look that is impressive to casual visitors as well as web designers looking for inspiration. The only text on the homepage is "MIKIYA KOBAYASHI" in capital letters at the center of your screen and the word "scroll" near the bottom center. The first thing visitors encounter after scrolling is the full-width background carousel of images that showcase some of this designer's best work.

We found the site is intuitive while still providing information visitors look for when browsing. Site navigation is readily available while not interfering with the project catalog. If you need more information, hovering over an image produces text that still integrates with what's behind, enabling you to remain focused on Kobayashi's designs. In addition to the full-width background, the page has an announcement bar but no social proof elements.

We appreciated the subtle webpage design compared to the more "in-your-face" layouts of the ESPN Sports Programming and Frans Hals Museum sites on this page. This website's esthetic is in line with a quote received from the company, "Mikiya Kobayashi's creation process is focused on the perception of its designs, looking for uniqueness in minimal shapes. His approach and philosophy also reflect the design of the studio's website."

How We Chose the Best Website Design Ideas

Website designers constantly challenge themselves to showcase their creativity, either by coming up with fresh web design ideas or improving current ones. Here we considered three aspects: the announcement bar, full-width background elements, and social proof.

Announcement Bar

The announcement bar sits at the top or bottom of a web page and displays a message that provides new information to visitors. A useful website announcement bar is one that's hard for visitors to miss. It can take the form of a sticky bar or slide-in bar. The importance of the message determines which type of announcement bar you should use.

Full-Width Background Elements

Full-width background elements are a common feature of modern websites. This website element works by displaying an image or video as the page’s background, covering the entire window. A full-width background element should scale well and leave no white space. Moreover, it should maintain image proportions, remain centered, be compatible across browsers, and not cause scrollbars.

Social Proof

Social proof occurs when someone assumes certain behaviors or attitudes are appropriate because other people adopt them. Applying this concept to website design, people usually like and respect websites that other people like and respect. You can create social proof for your website using customer testimonials and positive blurbs from established publications.
