There’s a decent chance that you’ve heard of SocialOomph before, just under a different name.
It was originally founded as TweetLater, focused solely on scheduling tweets.
Since then, the feature-set expanded enough to justify the rebranding.
The goal of SocialOomph is to save you time managing your social media marketing through automation.
It’s ideal if your small business spends a significant amount of time and effort on social media.
Even if you just spend five hours a week on social media, SocialOomph can potentially save you one or two hours, which will free up your time for other work.
But how much time you will save exactly will depend on how you spend your time on social media, and how much overlap there is with the SocialOomph feature-set.
So in this review, we’ll look at the most important features of the tool and how effective they could be for you.
Main Features of SocialOomph
On the homepage of SocialOomph, you’ll see a huge list of features.
I’m not going to break down all of them, because most won’t matter unless you get a lot of value from the core features in the first place.
So instead, let’s break down the few core features that are more important than the rest.
Schedule Tweets and Other Social Media Posts
The original tool scheduled Tweets and not much else. It saves a lot of time doing this sort of work in bulk, versus having to log in to Twitter at the right time and make a post.
Now, you can schedule posts on not only Twitter, but Facebook, Pinterest, and LinkedIn as well.
It’s a pretty simple interface. You select “add update,” write your post text and then pick from a few different scheduling options.
Note that you can connect multiple accounts to SocialOomph. If you do, you can select the account to post on here before you schedule the post.
Aside from just text posts, you can schedule any time of post on those supported platforms.
For example, on Facebook you can schedule:
- Photo uploads
- Status updates
- Group updates.
It’s slightly annoying that you have to navigate to a different location to post each unique type of content.
If you start creating a post in the wrong one, you’ll have to start over again when you switch.
Track Keywords on Twitter
A unique feature that SocialOomph offers is the ability to enter in keywords to track on Twitter.
SocialOomph will find tweets that contain these keywords and email you a list of them every 12 or 24 hours (your choice).
This could be useful in a few ways:
- If you’re using Twitter for audience research, it gives you a quick snapshot of what people currently care most about in your niche
- If you’re monitoring keywords that signal problems that your product solves, you can reply to those tweets directly.
Find Targeted Twitter Users to Follow
You can’t follow Twitter users automatically with tools anymore without a big risk of having your account suspended or banned.
Too many marketers were abusing this concept to mass follow users to try and get follow backs.
However, there’s nothing stopping a tool from finding people for you to follow. You can then follow those people by manually clicking “follow.”
SocialOomph lets you again enter keywords related to your product or niche. It will then search Twitter and find users who have tweeted using those keywords. You can see all these users in a list and decide if you’d like to follow them.
There’s a lot of advanced configuration options here too:
- Set up spam keywords and phrases to filter out
- Filter out users with a bad following-to-followers ratio
- Filter out users with a low number of tweets or a “young” account.
If actively following a lot of users is part of your social media strategy, this feature alone can save you multiple hours per week.
Is the Cost of SocialOomph Worth It?
At this point, it’s a simple math problem.
Is the value of the time that SocialOomph can save you more than the cost of the tool itself?
There is a free version available, which gets you most core Twitter features, but not much else.
Additionally, there’s a free trial available if you’re not sure exactly how much time the tool will save you.
Overall, the pricing isn’t exactly cheap for this kind of tool. However, if you value your time highly, and it saves you a few hours per month, it’s probably worth the investment.
Why SocialOomph Might Not Be the Right Tool for You
SocialOomph definitely offers a lot of value in the right situation.
It has a few big things going for it:
- It doesn’t try to do everything, it’s primarily a scheduling tool
- It’s reliable; the company has been in operation since 2008
- It has reasonably thorough help documentation.
That being said, there are so many social media tools out there. If SocialOomph doesn’t fulfill your exact needs, chances are that a competitor does.
There are a few big areas that I consider drawbacks to SocialOomph:
- Yes, there are help docs, but they could be better (video tutorials or lots of images would help)
- There’s no live chat or email support, only a ticketing system
- The design is unpolished, it’s clearly built with Bootstrap, with little customization
- It’s not as intuitive as it could be, and it will take you a while to figure out the names for everything you’d like to do.
Finally, there could be a tricky decision for you to make.
Even if SocialOomph is valuable enough to purchase, is the price worth it compared to competitors?
As I said, social media management is a crowded space with a ton of great, polished tools. You might be able to find one that you like better for a comparable or lower price.
SocialOomph is a solid and reliable tool for scheduling social media updates. It’s been in operation for years.
If your small business spends a lot of time on social media marketing, chances are that it’s worth investing in a SocialOomph or a similar type of tool.
