“I have personally used and recommended Hostinger in the past and have always been very happy with its hosting. After completing the research and testing for this review, my respect for the company has only gone up.” Michael Levanduski, Digital.com Hosting Expert

Hostinger started in 2004 as Hosting Media. The name and services have evolved over the years, with the name Hostinger coming in 2011 with the launch of its main hosting services. The hosting services have been growing rapidly for years and it was identified as the fastest-growing web hosting company in 2020. With over a million websites running on its servers, this company is a clear leader in the industry.

Hostinger has a noteworthy balance between affordable prices and premium services, which makes it a nice option for many different types of sites. One of my favorite things about Hostinger is that in addition to the normal hosting options (shared hosting, cloud hosting, VPS, etc) it offers hosting packages that are configured specifically for developers and Minecraft servers. This really helps the company stand out from the crowd.

With the entry-level hosting package starting at just $1.99 per month (with a 12-month subscription), most people and businesses can easily afford the services. In addition, new accounts can get a free domain name for the first year. To make this hosting an even better value, customers gain access to LiteSpeed to make their hosting faster and CloudFlare improve security.

In addition to standard hosting features, Hostinger offers a variety of great perks including:

  • Free site migration from other hosts
  • Custom “hPanel” control panel
  • Automatic installation of over 100 apps
  • Minecraft servers
  • Developer servers
  • Stand-alone email hosting
  • 30-Day no questions asked money-ack guarantee
  • Distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection
Hostinger Standout Features
Performance Fast and reliable hosting
Average Load Time Approximately .55 seconds
Average Response Time Approximately 116ms
Free Domain Yes. One free domain for the first year
SSL Free SSL certificate from LetsEncrypt.org
1-click WordPress Yes, included with all hosting packages
Support 24/7 support via email or live chat

What Makes Hostinger Stand Out?

  • Hostinger is more than standard website hosting
  • Hostinger uses LiteSpeed
  • Protected and powered by CloudFlare

While there are thousands of hosting companies out there, Hostinger really stands out in several important ways. First, it offers some niche services such as Minecraft servers and stand-alone email hosting. Next, this company uses LiteSpeed technology, which can help boost the speeds of your site. The company also utilizes CloudFlare for both DDoS protection and optimizing your site’s loading times. Learn more about why I think Hostinger really shines as one of the best hosting companies around.

Hostinger Is More Than Standard Website Hosting

One of the things I love most about Hostinger is that the provider seems to understand that web hosting can mean much more than just servers for websites. In addition to normal hosting (which it does an impressive job with), Hostinger offers focused services that many people will absolutely love. The three examples of this that I liked best are:

Minecraft Servers

Minecraft has been one of the most popular games in the world for years. With Hostinger, you can set up your own private game server so all your friends from around the world can play together. This is very popular with YouTubers, Twitch Streamers, and other professional gamers.

Stand-alone Email Hosting

While many hosting companies offer email options, Hostinger offers it as a stand-alone service. If you want a custom business email address, you can purchase this service on its own without website hosting.

Development Servers

If you are any type of developer, Hostinger offers notable development servers that make it easier to organize and coordinate your various products with clients, team members, and others.

Hostinger Uses LiteSpeed

Hostinger uses LiteSpeed web server software for all its hosting platforms. LiteSpeed is an excellent technology that offers faster response times and improved overall performance. While not as popular as Apache (a more popular hosting technology), Hostinger generally outperforms it. In addition, LiteSpeed is compatible with Apache, so if your site says it needs Apache, it will usually run even better on these servers.

LiteSpeed is a solid addition to any hosting environment. As of today, LiteSpeed is only being used on about 10% of websites, which means you may have a competitive edge by opting for hosting with this system.

Protected and Powered by CloudFlare

CloudFlare is a popular and powerful content delivery network (CDN) that also offers advanced DDoS mitigation. DDoS is a relatively simple but often very effective type of cyberattack that can target your website. Using CloudFlare will not only speed up your site’s load timese using standard CDN technology, it will also give you a good layer of security from DDoS attacks. Note that the entry-level hosting packages do not get the CloudFlare CDN (though they do still benefit from the CloudFlare security protections).

What Are the Pros and Cons of Hostinger?

I love Hostinger for many reasons, including its reliable hosting environments, quality CDN, and proven reputation. While there are no huge problems with this company, there are some downsides to note in case they will affect you in any way. Before signing up for an account with Hostinger, make sure you consider the pros and cons:

Pros

  1. Very popular: Hostinger has more than a million sites operating on its servers.
  2. LiteSpeed: Hostinger uses LiteSpeed, which I am a big fan of. This can give you noticeable performance improvements on most types of websites.
  3. Affordable hosting: Whether you are getting an entry-level option or something more advanced, the prices are always favorable at Hostinger. Note, however, that you need to sign up for at least a year to get the best deals.
  4. 30-day money-back guarantee: All new customers have a 30-day “no questions asked” money-back guarantee.
  5. 99.9% uptime guarantee: The hosting environment at Hostinger is very stable, and it is backed up with a 99.9% uptime guarantee.
  6. CloudFlare protection: All web hosting will get the benefits of CloudFlare-protected nameservers.
  7. Free domain: New customers will be given a free domain for the first year (with a 12-month hosting contract).
  8. Free SSL certificate: All websites hosted with Hostinger will have access to a free SSL certificate from Let’s Encrypt.

Cons

  1. No dedicated servers: Hostinger does not offer dedicated servers, which some larger companies may require. If your site grows to the point at which you want a dedicated server, you would either have to migrate to another company or consider one of Hostinger’s higher-end cloud hosting options.
  2. hPanel – The custom control panel used by Hostinger is not perfect. While it is easy to use and allows you to do most things without a problem, I still consider it to be slightly less functional than the standard cPanel option.
  3. CloudFlare CDN missing on basic hosting packages: If you opt for one of the two lowest-end hosting packages you will not get the CloudFlare CDN services.

Hostinger may be the best web host for: Just about everyone, with the one exception being those who require dedicated servers for their website. Whether you need standard web hosting, WordPress hosting, Minecraft servers, development environments, or variousf other things, Hostinger should definitely be on your short list of options.

If you are going to run a WordPress-based site, this type of package would be highly useful, unless you will be getting a lot of traffic and need a VPS or cloud hosting environment.

Hostinger VPS Hosting Package Options

*Note that Hostinger offers eight levels of VPS hosting. I am just listing the entry-level, mid-tier, and top-level options to avoid confusion.

This includes many types of businesses, e-commerce sites, bloggers, popular social media influencers, entrepreneurs, and more.

Who should use Hostinger Minecraft server hosting? Minecraft server hosting is a pretty niche thing. Anyone who wants their own private Minecraft server should consider this option from Hostinger.

Free Domain on Many Hosting Packages

When you sign up for hosting at Hostinger, you will likely qualify for a free domain name for the first year. Some of its entry-level packages do not include this perk, but I recommend using at least the Premium Shared Hosting package, which does include the free domain name.

Access to Zyro Site Builder Tools

All accounts with Hostinger are given access to the Zyro website builder. This tool lets you create customized websites in minutes without any need to code or program. The variety of tools, themes, and other features will allow you to make a beautiful site you will love.

Nameserver Protection from CloudFlare

All of Hostinger’s nameservers are protected by CloudFlare’s DDoS mitigation services. While the nameservers are shared by all Hostinger customers, this is an important layer of security to have in mind. Unprotected nameservers represent a serious vulnerability with some hosting companies, which could result in unwanted downtime. This may be a simple feature from Hostinger, but I love the added protection it provides.

Free SSL Certificate

All hosting packages at Hostinger come with a free shared SSL certificate from Let’s Encrypt SSL that will provide your site with significant security. It also ensures your site is following best practices regarding security, which Google confirms is important for proper SEO.

Custom hPanel for Control Panel

The vast majority of web hosting companies today use cPanel for their control panel; it is an easy-to-use interface that gives you great control over your hosting server and site. Rather than following the crowd, Hostinger created its own custom control panel called hPanel. I generally prefer the traditional cPanel since it has some added features and most people are used to it anyway.

While I do think that cPanel is better than hPanel in some ways, hPanel is still an intuitive set of tools that makes it easy to manage your site. If you have never run a website before, you will quickly learn how to navigate hPanel and won’t run into any real issues. But if you have used cPanel in the past, it might take you a bit to get used to the changes, thoughit isn’t a huge deal.

Easy to Manage All of Your Services

Whether you are runningone basic website or many, you can manage them all from hPanel. You can perform things like installing content management systems (CMS), running backups, and building your sites all from one convenient location. This also allows you to access your sites with one convenient username and password, which most people will appreciate.

This hPanel is also where you reach out to the Hostinger customer support team or browse the store to add new features if needed.

Lots of Site Add-Ons

Once you have your hosting account set up, you can customize it using the included site add-on features. This includes a variety of templates and themes (if you use the Zyro website buildings tools), convenient backup options, and much more.

Domain-Specific Email Addresses

You can add email hosting to your web hosting account or purchase it on its own. This premium email hosting option will give you a lot of worthwhile features to help you make the most out of your email.

Once you set up your email accounts you will have access to email templates, read receipts, follow-up reminders, and much more. Note that the email hosting is not a free feature with Hostinger so you will have to add it on or purchase it separately.

99.9% Uptime Guarantee

All of the hosting packages at Hostinger come with a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Your hosting servers will be available to serve traffic at least 99.9% of the time, which is right in line with the industry standard. While the company only guarantees that your servers will be up 99.9% of the time, it is actually much more reliable than that in most situations. If you opt for the Minecraft server hosting, you will get a 99.99% uptime guarantee.

CloudFlare CDN on Many Hosting Packages

Starting at the Business Shared Hosting package, you will get free access to the CloudFlare CDN. This helps to speed up the loading times for your website by housing key site files in data centers around the world. The CloudFlare CDN boasts 152 separate locations, meaning your site will always be hosted in a location physically close to your visitors.

LiteSpeed Technology

I love that Hostinger uses LiteSpeed on all of its hosting packages. This allows faster response times on the server compared to other technologies most hosting companies use. In addition, many web hosting packages will give you free access to the CloudFlare CDN, which can further speed up your site’s loading.

Advanced Security Features

Security is always important with web hosting, and Hostinger takes that responsibility seriously. In addition to offering a free SSL certificate and name server protections, it also scans all files regularly for viruses, offers effective backup options, and makes sure site add-ons are kept up-to-date.

Uptime and Reliability

After running extensive tests on Hostinger’s environment, we found it had a 100% uptime over the past 30 days, which is obviously very impressive. The all-time uptime percentage is 99.966%, which is wonderful. After performing these tests, I can definitely say that you probably won’t experience significant unexpected outages for your website.

Site Response Times

When testing site response times it is important to keep in mind that the speed depends on at least two major things. First, note the web hosting company’s servers and infrastructure, which in the case of Hostinger, are superior. The second factor is how the site itself is made. I cannot determine how your site will be created so these tests look specifically at Hostinger.

Hostinger's Response Time Results
Source: hrank.com

After running multiple tests on Hostinger’s side, the average response time was between 450ms and 625ms, which is very good. The response time is the delay from the moment you attempt to reach the servers until you get the first response back. It will include transit time between your computer and the Hostinger servers. To put it simply, speed will not be an issue when using Hostinger

Optimized WordPress Hosting

Hostinger has several hosting packages designed specifically for WordPress hosting. If you are using the very popular WordPress CMS, it is recommended to look at these hosting options first. They are optimized to run WordPress-based sites as efficiently as possible.

SSL Certificates

SSL Certificates have become an essential part of any reputable website today so it is good that Hostinger offers them for free on all its hosting packages. The free SSL Certificates are shared certificates from Let’s Encrypt, one of the leaders in this technology.

In addition to allowing your site to use this standard encryption protocol, it also helps ensure your site can rank as good as possible with the search engines. Google has confirmed it prioritizes sites with SSL certificates over those that do not.

DDoS Mitigation

DDoS attacks are one of the most common forms of cyberattacks, with countless incidents occurring every day. These types of attacks can take a website offline for extended periods of time if not properly handled. Hostinger has all its traffic flowing through CloudFlare’s DDoS mitigation system to protect your site from this type of attack.

While you never want to run into problems with your web hosting, it is good to know that you will get support quickly when you need it. Hostinger offers 24/7 support to all its customers. You can reach out via live chat or email. Unfortunately, the company does not offer phone-based support. While most people today would prefer live chat anyway, it is disappointing that using the phone is not an option.

In addition to the live support team, there is a great self-help section that will give you answers to most types of questions and assist you through many difficulties. The help page also displays the system status so you will know when a problem is on Hostinger’s end.

These are some of the recent product improvements made available by Hostinger:

  • Easy Account Sharing – Hostinger recently made it easier to share your account with friends, coworkers, employees, and others. This can make it a lot simpler to manage your site.
  • Plan Boost – If you are expecting a day with high levels of traffic (such as if you are running a promotion or advertisement) you can engage plan boost, which doubles your hosting capabilities for 24 hours.
  • Improved WordPress Migration – Hostinger has recently updated its WordPress site migration tools to make it faster and easier to move a WordPress-based site from another hosting company to Hostinger.
  • Updated WordPress Security – Hostinger regularly updates security across the site, but especially on its WordPress hosting environments since those are a primary target by cybercriminals.

How I Rated Hostinger

As someone who has been running websites and evaluating hosting companies for well over a decade, I love to see how the industry has evolved and improved over the years. In the early days of the Internet, there were a lot of low-quality hosting companies, but today they are much less common. While this is definitely a plus for people who need hosting, it does make ranking and reviewing the companies a challenge because many are so good.

Anytime I am reviewing a hosting company I start by providing objective facts about the services and features offered. In addition, I will add in my own thoughts and opinions on the services based on many years of experience in this industry.

When conducting this review on Hostinger, I spent hours reading and researching the services ity offers. In addition, I spent a considerable amount of time actually using the system and interacting with the various features. For this company in particular, I also relied on my personal experience operating a website using its hosting services. Though, in full disclosure, I no longer have a website running on its servers. I don’t own the website I had on Hostinger’s servers anymore, but I was very happy with the services while I did own the site.

After conducting comprehensive research on this platform, I can confidently give Hostinger 4.8 out of 5 stars. It would easily get a perfect 5/5 if it had dedicated hosting and expanded things like the CDN and free domain to its entry-level hosting packages. Also, while I personally don’t like using phone support, I do think that it is an important service that companies should offer.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this review of Hostinger.
