Visit DreamHost

Every service on this list offers an uptime of at least 99.9%, but DreamHost goes a step further by guaranteeing a full 100%. While it’s impossible to eliminate the risk of an outage, DreamHost is the only major provider to guarantee 100% and offer compensation for downtime.

DreamHost offers several kinds of web hosting including shared, VPS, dedicated, cloud, and managed WordPress plans. They also provide 24/7 support via email or live chat, so you can talk to a live agent at any time of day. Along with web hosting, DreamHost also sells several additional digital services such as email hosting, domain names, marketing, and design.

Dreamhost Dashboard

Pricing

We found that DreamHost provides relatively low prices for most types of hosting, with subscriptions available for one month, one year, or three years. The Shared Starter plan, which is the cheapest subscription DreamHost offers, costs $4.95 per month, $2.95 per month when paid annually, or $2.59 per month when paid triennially. That makes it significantly cheaper than InMotion and most other competitors, although it isn’t quite as affordable as Hostinger.

Dedicated servers, on the other hand, start at $149.00 per month and don’t compare as favorably to some of the competitors we’ve mentioned. As mentioned above, InMotion will give you 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD for $139 per month, while the cheapest DreamHost plan comes with just 4 GB and a 1 TB HDD.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • 100% uptime guarantee
  • 24/7 support

Cons

  • Higher prices for some services

What Customers Are Saying

While DreamHost heavily emphasizes its guarantee of 100% uptime, the reality is slightly more complicated. PCMag called DreamHost “incredibly stable,” but they still experienced a failure during their testing. The DreamHost terms of service don’t offer much clarity, first saying that “Customer is entitled to compensation if Customer’s website, databases, email, FTP, SSH or webmail become unusable as a result of failure(s) in DreamHost systems for reasons other than previously announced scheduled maintenance, coding or configuration errors on the part of the Customer,&r

Visit Hostinger

Hostinger is a great place to start our search for a new hosting provider, both for its surprisingly low prices and its wide range of servers. We found that you can get a full four years of shared web hosting for as little as $1.39 per month—in other words, one payment of $66.72 plus tax to cover 48 months of hosting. While the cost rises to $2.99 per month after the initial four-year subscription, this is still in line with some of the cheapest hosting providers currently available.

If you aren’t interested in shared hosting, you can also use Hostinger for cloud, WordPress, cPanel, or VPS hosting—Hostinger even offers comprehensive hosting solutions for Minecraft players. The platform also provides a variety of other tools such as a website builder, ecommerce suite, domain transfers, SSL certificates, and Google Workspace email hosting.

Hostinger Dashboard

Pricing

Like the basic shared hosting plan, all of Hostinger’s other hosting arrangements offer a significant discount in exchange for a four-year commitment. Smaller discounts are available for shorter periods  — while an initial four-year commitment comes at $1.39 per month, the same service is available for two years ($1.99 per month), one year ($2.99 per month), or one month ($9.49 per month plus a one-time $4.99 setup fee).

Even considering the built-in price jump after the first subscription, we feel that Hostinger still compares favorably to some of its top competitors. InMotion, for example, starts at $5.99 per month for shared hosting—and that price includes a substantial price drop for the maximum two-year commitment.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Affordable rates
  • Built-in Cloudflare protection
  • 24/7 support over live chat

Cons

  • No dedicated hosting

What Customers Are Saying

Hostinger promises 99.9% uptime, and that guarantee is backed up by both reviewers and paying customers. The platform also posts updates on a dedicated incident history page for maximum transparency. However, users who are interested in dedicated hosting should look for another provider.

Visit HostPapa

HostPapa offers shared hosting, VPS, and WordPress hosting along with domain names and a robust website builder. Their VPS hosting subscriptions start at just $19.99 per month when you commit to a three-year plan, and all VPS hosting arrangements come with SSD storage rather than HDD so we’ve named them the top choice for VPS Hosting.

Furthermore, HostPapa doesn’t place limits on domains and sites, so you can set up as many as your virtual server can handle. They offer self-managed, managed, and fully managed plans, giving users the flexibility to outsource the back end to HostPapa or take full control over their hosting arrangement.

HostPapa Dashboard

Pricing

HostPapa’s shared hosting arrangements start at just $3.95 per month, putting them slightly above the lowest prices from Hostinger and some other providers. VPS hosting is available for as little as $19.99 per month, which is a surprisingly affordable rate. Their WordPress hosting is some of the most wallet-friendly on the market, with plans starting at the same $3.95 per month price point.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Default SSD storage
  • Unlimited domains and websites
  • Managed and unmanaged arrangements

Cons

  • No dedicated hosting

What Customers Are Saying

While most users have positive impressions of HostPapa, we found that some reviewers have criticized the platform’s long wait times for customer service. PCMag, for example, spent more than 10 minutes waiting for a response, mitigating some of the benefits of 24/7 support availability. Response times may vary depending on the channel, time of the day, and the day of the week.

Best for Cloud Hosting
Visit SiteGround

SiteGround is a growing hosting service with shared, cloud, WordPress, and WooCommerce plans. While SiteGround offers excellent performance for all four types of hosting, we believe its cloud subscriptions are especially helpful due to their auto-scaling option. This tool will automatically allocate more resources to your site whenever there’s an increase in traffic, ensuring that you won’t be left without service.

Managed cloud hosting starts at $100 per month, and you can always add resources manually as needed. All cloud subscriptions also come with automatic updates for WordPress and WooCommerce users, allowing you to focus on other areas of your business.

SiteGround Dashboard

Pricing

As mentioned above, the most affordable SiteGround cloud plan costs $100 per month. Custom cloud subscriptions run from $100 per month to $2090 per month for a maxed-out plan.

SiteGround shared hosting is available from $6.99 per month, although this rises to $14.99 per month after the introductory offer. WordPress and WooCommerce plans are available for the same price.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Scalable cloud hosting plans
  • 24/7 support

Cons

  • No uptime guarantee

What Customers Are Saying

SiteGround’s prices are slightly inflated relative to the competition—you can get shared hosting for much less than $6.99 from Hostinger and many of the other providers we’ve listed. To be fair, most users agree that you get a lot more for your money. Along with basic features like SSL certificates, reliable uptime, and SSD storage, users also report positive experiences with the platform’s 24/7 customer service.

Visit InMotion Hosting

InMotion is another top hosting provider that currently offers the best money-back guarantee on our list. You’ll be able to cancel and receive a refund for any payments up to a full 90 days after you sign up for a new subscription. While there’s technically no free trial, you’ll have more than enough time to test out the service before hitting the 90-day deadline.

Unlike Hostinger, InMotion provides dedicated hosting arrangements. You can also use the service for shared, VPS, or WordPress hosting depending on your needs. Furthermore, it offers an impressive 99.99% uptime guarantee—in other words, ten times less downtime than you could experience with a provider that only guarantees 99.9% uptime.

Along with web hosting, InMotion makes it easy to set up a WordPress site using their website builder. Its drag-and-drop interface streamlines the process of creating a sleek, professional website even if you don’t have any technical experience.

InMotion Dashboard

Pricing

Similar to other hosting providers, InMotion gives users deep discounts in exchange for longer commitments. The Pro shared hosting plan, for example, costs $19.99 per month when paid monthly, $15.99 per month when paid annually, and $14.99 per month when paid every other year.

InMotion offers several plans for each type of hosting. Shared hosting starts at $5.99 per month, WordPress hosting starts at $6.99 per month, VPS hosting starts at $31.99 per month, and dedicated hosting starts at $99.99 per month.

We feel its hosting is pricey compared to some competitors—while Hostinger offers subscriptions for less than $2 per month, the cheapest InMotion plan is $5.99 per month. With that being said, InMotion provides outstanding functionality and features. InMotion and Bluehost offer comparable dedicated hosting plans at $139.99 and 149.99 per month respectively, but InMotion’s arrangement comes with 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD compared to just 4 GB and a 1 TB HDD with the comparable Bluehost DreamHost plan.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • 99.99% uptime
  • 90-day money-back guarantee

Cons

What Customers Are Saying

InMotion has received excellent reviews from several sources, and most users have positive experiences with the platform’s uptime. WP Engine is one of the most well-known WordPress hosting platforms, with managed hosting available for as little as $25 per month when billed annually. It’s an all-in-one solution for WordPress sites, and you can rely on WP Engine to handle a wide range of tasks.

Overall, we found that WP Engine is the best option for WordPress sites due to features like daily backups, WordPress security, and reliable customer service. With WordPress preinstalled for all WP Engine subscribers, you can get started with your new WordPress site in just a few minutes.

Along with basic managed WordPress hosting, WP Engine also offers ecommerce hosting for businesses that sell products or services through WooCommerce. These subscriptions come with several features for ecommerce vendors such as WooCommerce themes and templates and a store search tool that makes it easy for visitors to find what they’re looking for.

WP Engine Dashboard

Pricing

WP Engine offers four broad types of hosting. Managed Hosting is the basic option, with plans available from $25 per month ($30 per month when paid monthly). Higher tiers come with the same features but offer more bandwidth, sites, visits, and storage. All subscriptions come with two free months when paid annually instead of monthly, so it’s worth making the longer commitment if you know you’ll have ongoing hosting needs.

Starting at $28.33 per month (paid annually), Managed Hosting Plus comes with the same features in addition to automatic plugin updates and automatic rollbacks when issues are detected. Ecommerce hosting (available from $30 per month when paid annually) provides the ecommerce-specific tools mentioned above for a slightly higher price.

Finally, WP Engine’s Secure Hosting plans provide DDoS and WAF protection. The prices are significantly higher at $44.17 per month (paid annually) and above, but you won’t have to worry about protecting your website with another cybersecurity service.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Flexible pricing for websites and online stores
  • Built for WordPress (and WooCommerce) sites
  • 24/7 support via phone or live chat

Cons

InMotion and other providers on this list provide money-back guarantees that will cover you for a few months, but we like that CloudWays is one of the few hosting services that allow you to try it out for free. Our research found that new users can test a fully-featured version of CloudWays for up to three days without needing to provide payment information to start a free trial.

CloudWays focuses on cloud hosting and works differently from many other providers. They contract the back-end out to DigitalOcean, Linode, Vultr, AWS, and GCE, and you work with CloudWays directly to access their support, dashboard, and quality of life features. The three-day free trial is available for all of the providers above except Amazon Web Services.

CloudWays Dashboard

Pricing

We noticed that with CloudWays, pricing depends on your needs as well as the provider you want to use for hosting. DigitalOcean is the cheapest option, starting at just $10 per month. That plan comes with 1 core, 1 GB of RAM, 25 GB of storage, and 1 TB of bandwidth. Vultr subscriptions start at $11 per month, Linode subscriptions start at $12 per month, Google Cloud subscriptions start at $33.18 per month, and AWS subscriptions start at $36.51 per month.

Cons

What Customers Are Saying

That Hosting Company’s VPS hosting plans are compatible with both Windows and Linux and run from $10 per month (1 core, 2 GB of RAM, 250 Mbps) to $59 per month (8 cores, 8 GB to 32 GB of RAM, 2 Gbps). Dedicated hosting is also in line with most of the competition at $109 to $350 per month.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Free domain name with some plans
  • Shared, VPS, dedicated, and WordPress hosting
  • Starts at just $3 per month

Cons

  • Poor site design; no mention of 24/7 support

What Customers Are Saying

How We Choose the Best Web Hosting

Whether you receive 1,000 monthly visitors or 1,000,000, good web hosting is fundamental to strong site performance. You don’t need to break the bank to get reliable performance, but you also shouldn’t cut costs without understanding what you’re losing.

In preparing this article, we took a close look at some of the most popular Canadian web hosting providers in 2021. While there is a wide range of differences between various services, we primarily focused on three of the most important web hosting features.

Uptime

The point of web hosting is to keep your website online, so the most fundamental feature we look for is dependable uptime. Fortunately, all the providers on this list provide at least 99.9% uptime—one goes even further by offering a guarantee of 100% uptime.

We also investigated further to look at user experiences with each provider along with looking at stated uptime. Regardless of what other features a provider offers, you don’t want to deal with a service that doesn’t give you perfect (or nearly perfect) uptime.

Server Types

Most smaller businesses stick with shared hosting plans, but you may be interested in another arrangement, depending on your budget and needs. In a shared hosting plan, you’ll be splitting a server and resources with other websites, but you’ll also get lower prices.

The next step up from shared hosting is VPS (virtual private server) hosting, which gives each user a virtualized server instance on a shared physical server. This is a good option for organizations that need more bandwidth and reliability than they can get with shared hosting.

Dedicated hosting offers full access to a server’s resources along with more fine-tuned control over your configuration. Dedicated hosting arrangements tend to be substantially more expensive than either shared or VPS hosting.

In addition to these three main types of hosting, some providers also offer managed hosting for WordPress sites. These services are specifically designed for WordPress users, and they can usually be set up very quickly in just a few steps.

Finally, cloud hosting detaches your website from an individual physical server, instead allocating resources from multiple servers. Because your site won’t be connected to any particular server, cloud hosting is very easy to scale compared to other types of hosting arrangements.

Different providers offer different combinations of services—some only offer WordPress hosting, for example, while others also provide shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting. We’ll note the options available from each provider, so focus on services that support the kind of arrangement you’re looking for.

Pricing

As mentioned earlier, pricing shouldn’t be your only consideration when you’re looking for a new hosting provider. Your web hosting provider will greatly impact your site’s speed and availability, so performance should always be your priority.

That being said, the web hosting environment is extremely competitive in 2021, so there’s no reason to overspend when so many other platforms are available. With that in mind, we’ll also go through the pricing plans of each provider to help you find a cost-effective option for your organization.
