Every user and project is different, so we can't necessarily say that you'll have the ideal experience with any particular provider. However, we feel that Ninox is the best place for most clients to start their search for a new no-code development service. Along with an impressive review average of 4.8 out of 5, it also stood out to us due to its clear, intuitive interface and strong performance on both desktop and mobile. It's our pick as the top overall no-code development platform on the market in 2022.

As of December 28, 2021, the current version of Ninox is 3.5.0, which was released on October 7. That update introduced support for three new single sign-on (SSO) protocols: SAML 2.0, OIDC, and ADDS. It also gave users the ability to set their own password parameters for things like length, required characters, and the length of time a team member can use the same password without creating a new one. Given the range of changes that came with Ninox 3.5.0, it's possible that their team simply focuses on occasional major updates instead of frequent releases that only make a few small adjustments.

Ninox offers separate licensing and subscription plans for individuals and teams. While the mobile apps are free to access for individual users, the Mac app is available for a one-time fee of €34.99 (roughly $40 USD). The Ninox Cloud collaboration platform, on the other hand, runs €10 per user, per month, billed annually (roughly $11 USD). That plan also comes with 2 GB of file storage per user, but you can upgrade to a custom Enterprise solution for access to more features, such as SSO, custom branding, and a dedicated account manager.

What Customers Are Saying

Ninox was slightly behind AppSheet as the provider with the best user reviews, but its average score of 4.8 still puts it near the top of the no-code development space. While all software inevitably receives some negative comments, the vast majority of users appear to have had great experiences with Ninox.

Regardless of the type of software involved, user reviews are always a critical part of our evaluations. AppSheet has received nearly perfect customer feedback, with an average score of 4.9 out of 5. Furthermore, that average was derived from more than 1,000 unique users, giving us a high degree of confidence in AppSheet's services. In particular, customers mentioned that they were able to create apps and perform other complex tasks with little to no coding experience. Based on our research, AppSheet is the best no-code development platform in 2022 when it comes to user reviews.

While AppSheet offers a mobile app on both iOS and Android devices, this aspect of its services doesn't seem to be as popular as the desktop version. The Android app has an unimpressive average review score of 3.6, and the iOS version is slightly better at 3.7. Users on both platforms appeared to have trouble with technical errors, and many were unable to get helpful responses from the customer support team.

If you're new to AppSheet, you can build and test apps with as many as 10 users at no charge. Subscriptions run $5 per user, per month, for Starter and $10 per user, per month, for Core, which adds in some extra features, including bar code scanning, role-based permissions, email support, and a natural language assistant. High-volume clients can also work out a custom Enterprise or Enterprise Plus plan for even more tools like app lifecycle management, activity tracking, and governance policy enforcement (Enterprise Plus only).

What Customers Are Saying

With the best reviews of any platform we've looked at, AppSheet is one of the most popular providers in the no-code development space. We found some criticism of its customer service, but these seemed to be minor issues relative to the overall experience.

No-code development platforms should be relatively easy to use, but there's no way to predict when you might have trouble with your application. Even if you just have a simple question, you don't want to waste any time waiting for your provider to get back to you. Appy Pie offers highly responsive 24/5 support, with help available through both email and phone. We also found extremely high praise for its customer service, making Appy Pie an easy choice as the provider with the best support in 2022.

Most of the no-code development platforms we've seen focus on mobile apps, so we were happy to see that Appy Pie offers support for many other projects. You can leverage its services to create websites, task automations, chatbots, live chat services, or graphics to promote your brand. Appy Pie also integrates with many common third-party applications, including Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Appy Pie has a somewhat unconventional pricing system, inviting users to "build your own app, pick a plan later." There don't appear to be any predetermined subscriptions, so pricing for your use case will likely depend on the specific situation. Furthermore, users can leverage the add-on package to access even more features, including white labeling, unlimited push notifications, unlimited update resubmissions, and a dedicated account manager. However, there also isn't any information about pricing for the add-on pack.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Helpful 24/5 customer service
  • Supports mobile apps, websites, chatbots, and more
  • Solid user reviews

Cons

  • Unclear pricing

What Customers Are Saying

Most Appy Pie users seem to have a positive experience. While we noticed that they were especially enthusiastic about the provider's customer service, many reviewers also focused on other aspects of the platform, such as its ease of use and thorough educational resources.

While no-code development services make it much easier to produce apps, platforms vary widely in terms of their usability. Clappia stood out to us as a particularly approachable option for users who are intimidated by conventional development practices. It claims that customers can "build powerful mobile and web apps with only basic Excel skills," and that statement is backed up by extremely positive customer reviews. We feel confident recommending Clappia as the easiest no-code development platform to use in 2022.

While Clappia appears to have had a relatively active community in the past, we noticed that its community support forum appears to have been mostly abandoned for at least 2021 and the last few months of 2020. With no posts since that time and a notice that forums are "closed to new topics and replies," it's unclear whether Clappia has any plans to reboot these support discussions.

A standard Clappia subscription costs $7 per user, per month, or $5 per user, per month, when billed annually, for a minimum of five users. That plan comes with the features most clients will need, including application programming interface (API) access and the ability to access apps from within the Clappia launcher. Like many other providers, Clappia also offers a custom enterprise plan with advanced tools like white-labeled mobile apps, dedicated support staff, AI/ML functionality, security audits, and no fees for additional users of more than 1,000.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Simple, intuitive interface
  • 4.7 average review score
  • Starts at $5 per user, per month, billed annually

Cons

  • Dead support forum

What Customers Are Saying

Clappia's average review score of 4.7 puts it in line with most competitors, which is slightly behind AppSheet, which was our choice as the platform with the best feedback. While ease of use seemed to be the main theme, we also noticed mostly positive comments about customer support.

While no-code development platforms generally offer a free demo or testing experience, Caspio's free offerings seemed to be more generous than what we've seen from other providers. The free plan comes with a surprisingly robust set of features, with 100 monthly email notifications, 500 MB of file storage, 50,000 data records, and a decent range of app creation tools. The downside is that your apps will include Caspio branding, but this is still the best free option available in 2022.

Caspio 30.0 was released on November 30, 2021, and started with a redesign of the user interface. This update also introduced a beta for the new Document Generation tool, which gives users the tools to build custom PDFs and fill cells or fields automatically by connecting them to data from Caspio. For example, you might want to create a field for addresses and then configure the generator to add the corresponding information when producing new documents.

Paid Caspio subscriptions run $125 per month for Explore, $250 per month for Build, and $500 per month for Grow, with custom Corporate solutions for clients that want Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) compliance, service-level agreements (SLAs), or other features relevant to larger organizations. Along with everything from the Explore tier, Build also comes with version histories, short message service (SMS) notifications, location-based services, custom workflows, and other advanced features. Finally, Grow introduces things like PDF reports, Payment Card Industry (PCI)-compliant payments, and Zapier integrations.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Limited free plan with support for unlimited users

Cons

What Customers Are Saying

Caspio's average score of 4.5 out of 5 puts it in line with most of the other applications we've covered, but significantly below top alternatives like AppSheet. We noticed that this score was pulled down by recurring criticism of the platform's ease of use.

Best for Customer Relationship Management
Visit Creatio
Creatio is a full-service business automation suite that offers low-code development, customizable client portals, out-of-the-box applications, and dedicated customer relationship management (CRM) tools for marketing, sales, and customer support. While you might be planning to approach those areas of your business separately, Creatio gives you the chance to integrate them within a single application. As a comprehensive solution, we found that Creatio is the best choice in 2022 for clients that also need help with their CRM.

Subscribers are expecting the release of Creatio 8.0 on February 8, 2022, but the team appears to put out a new version of the application at least once every month or two. For example, the minor 7.18.5 release came out on December 7, 2021, and added a few small, but helpful features. One convenient quality-of-life change was the addition of a tool that can automatically merge duplicate entries based on custom parameters.

Creatio offers three separate products: marketing, sales, and service. Pricing depends on which combination of those services you need, the specific features you're looking for, and (for marketing) the number of emails you send to each contact per month. You'll also pay slightly higher rates for cloud deployments compared to on-premises setups. That pricing system makes it difficult to compare the cost of Creatio to other platforms, but user reviews seem to indicate that customers feel OK about what they pay for the service.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Covers marketing, sales, and customer support
  • Consistently updated
  • 4.6 user review score

Cons

  • Less feedback for mobile app

What Customers Are Saying

While there are only a few reviews of the Creatio mobile apps, feedback for the broader service is overwhelmingly positive with an average score of 4.6. Customers appreciate how easy Creatio makes it for them to optimize different areas of their business.

With so many providers focusing on desktop services, it can be hard to find a no-code development platform that caters to the needs of mobile users. Kintone's iOS app has a mediocre review score of 3.4 out of 5, but the Android app appears to be much more popular with a 4.8 average. While the mobile app doesn't provide as much functionality as the desktop version, it at least enables users to access and share information or make edits to their data as needed. iOS users will need to look elsewhere, but Kintone is a great choice for users who want to oversee their workflows from an Android device.

The Kintone team recently put out information about its January 2022 product updates, which are scheduled to release on January 10. That update will include some basic quality-of-life improvements, such as refreshing the status of exported files automatically or zooming in and out of images instead of being stuck at one size. It's also intended to give users more control over their updates by enabling them to disable specific new features without losing the rest of the update.

Kintone offers separate solutions for businesses, enterprises, 501(c)3 nonprofits, and educational/government institutions. While the enterprise option comes with custom quotes and features, the other three come with an identical set of features. The key difference is the price, with professional plans running $24 per month per user (minimum five users) and the others just $15 per month per user with the same minimum. Users can also integrate a variety of free and paid add-ons to the base Kintone platform.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Reliable customer service

Cons

What Customers Are Saying

Kintone has a solid review score of 4.6 and an even higher 4.8 average when it comes to the Android app. Many users mentioned that they were able to get a helpful response quickly from the customer support team when they ran into trouble with the platform.

Microsoft Power Apps has surprisingly mixed reviews for such a major platform, but we still think it's worth a recommendation for clients who are already invested in the Microsoft Power ecosystem. If you're using apps like Power BI or Power Virtual Agents, you can connect them easily to Power Apps and create a more cohesive workflow. Even users who had some negative things to say about Power Apps agreed that it works well with other Microsoft services.

Another thing that stood out to us about Microsoft Power Apps was its popular mobile apps, which have received much more positive reviews than the desktop service. While you can't do any development work on a mobile device, you can access any app you've already created easily. The app has an excellent 4.8 average score on iOS, with a slightly lower 4.4 on Android. We noticed that the Android review score has dropped in recent months as users complain about new bugs that continue to go unresolved.

Microsoft gives users three subscription options for the Power Apps service. You can pay $5 per user, per app, and this plan also comes with 250 monthly AI Builder service credits. Alternatively, you can pay $20 per user, per month, and get unlimited apps and portals for each user plus 500 monthly artificial intelligence (AI) builder service credits. Finally, Azure subscribers can opt for a pay-as-you-go plan at $10 per active user, per app, per month, with the ability to immediately scale up or down as needed.

Cons

Betty Blocks is a no-code development service that made an impression on us due to its thorough documentation and educational content. New users can access detailed guides, dedicated online courses, an active community support forum, and many other resources. While some customers have trouble getting onboarded with the interface and design, those resources should help you get things up and running.

On top of that content, Betty Blocks also provides detailed information about recent updates on its website. With multiple releases being put out every month, it's clear that the development team is invested in keeping the application running as well as possible. Naturally, most updates are relatively minor with such a frequent schedule, but there are still occasional releases that make more drastic changes to the platform.

In contrast to most of the other providers we looked at, Betty Blocks doesn't offer any preset subscription options. However, new users can start out with a demo or a 14-day free trial, and you should have the opportunity to get more information about pricing from its sales team. With the growth of the software-as-a-service (SaaS) industry during the past 10 years and beyond, reliable open-source software has become harder and harder to find. Joget is our pick as the top open-source no-code development platform in 2022 because of its strong user reviews and commitment to the principles of open-source software. While paid managed deployments are also available, anyone can get the free community edition up and running in just a few minutes.

When we visited the Joget website, its product roadmap hadn't been updated since March 2020. However, that appeared to be an issue with its formatting as we were able to find some information about recent updates in the knowledge base. The platform appears to get a new release at least once every few weeks. Most of those updates are limited to minor changes, but it's still a good sign for the long-term direction of the platform.

Joget is free for both cloud and on-premises deployments. The self-hosted version comes with a GPL open-source license and will likely require more work. The free cloud service is limited to three users and comes with shared hosting. Premium access starts at $80 per user for the self-hosted Professional plan or $2 per user, per month, for the cloud Starter option. You can also upgrade to a higher tier for extra features like priority support, dedicated servers, or dedicated cloud hosting.

Joget's review score of 4.4 out of 5 puts it at the lower end of the providers we've covered, but still illustrates a decent degree of customer satisfaction. However, most customers still had positive things to say about the application's design and ease of use.

How We Chose the Best No-code Development Platforms

Development quickly becomes a crucial task as a business grows but hiring professional developers can lead to significant costs. No-code and low-code development platforms give users with less technical experience the ability to perform a variety of key business processes.

While coding isn't going away anytime soon, no-code development software can be a great investment if it helps you optimize your workflow. We evaluated some of the most popular platforms using these four criteria to separate the best providers from the rest of the pack.

Functionality

The first thing you'll need to consider when looking at no-code development services is the scope of your project. Some of the providers we've covered focus on mobile apps, but there are also development platforms available for many other tasks.

Ninox was our choice as the best overall option in 2022, but that doesn't mean it's the right choice for every situation. Appy Pie, for example, supports websites, chatbots, visual design, and other projects along with mobile apps.

Usability

With the right no-code development software, you'll have no trouble putting together apps, websites, and other projects. These applications are built to make conventional development more approachable, so usability should be another key consideration when looking for a new provider.

Ease of use might seem like an aesthetic issue, but problems with your software can make your workflow significantly less efficient. We recommend Clappia as the easiest no-code application to use in 2022 for customers who don't have as much technical experience or simply want the smoothest possible experience.

Customer Support

As with any other business software, customer support is a crucial element of a development platform. Even if the software ends up streamlining your workflow, you're likely to experience some growing pains as you get it set up and start learning more about its features.

When evaluating customer support, we considered the types of service each provider offers, such as email, phone, and live chat conversations. We also looked at user reviews to see how satisfied real customers were with their service interactions. Overall, we found that Appy Pie has the best support of any provider available in 2022.
