  • WordPress is one of the most popular platforms due to the fact that the basic tools are free ― you still need to pay for some other things, and we’ll address this later ― and that it is fairly flexible for you to be able to create elaborate content.   • Wix is ideal for people who want to get an online store up quickly but lack much technical expertise. Sites can be built from templates easily.
  • Shopify is one of the most popular e-commerce platforms as it provides a one-stop-shop for putting together online stores quickly. This also includes hosting.
  • Squarespace is another popular and easy-to-use online platform that enables you to create an online store.
  • Square Online was created to pair with its popular payment processing hardware for small regional shops. It provides the tools for creating a free online store.

While it’s not terribly difficult to learn to use these platforms, there is likely to be some variation in the steps that you need to follow, depending on which one you choose.

Choose a plan

Each of these different online store platforms has a series of plans. You need to spend some time researching these to determine which one best complements the product or business you have. The pricing varies from “free” (with caveats) to more expensive for more products and flexibility.

To exist online, one thing that even the “free” platforms require is that you purchase some web hosting. Web hosting provides the digital equivalent to the brick-and-mortar storefront of a store. With most online storefront platforms, you can either build a site using their tools or use many templates or themes that will become the design, look, and feel of your online store. There is a wide range of options that are available, especially with WordPress, ranging from free to a small fee.

When you choose a template, you need to note not only how you want your site to look but how easy it is to navigate and how it feels to your customers. There are free options, but they may have some drawbacks. One thing to keep in mind is you usually get what you pay for.

Note: You can often change templates along the way and, in many cases, it may be seamless. However, if you have customized your site in any way, changing themes could take some work.

Add Products

Of course, you need to add your products to your store. Every platform has a different method for handling this.

Customize your store

You can customize your store at any point. You don’t necessarily need to have added products first. However, it might be easier to do so at this point so that you can see how you wish them to be positioned. You want to choose a color scheme that best highlights your products and overall goal and feel of how you wish to present your store. Choose a font that conveys the feel of the site, but make sure it is readable.

Keep the overall customer experience in mind. Consider usability and user experience (UX) as a major part of how you want your site to feel to customers. This means creating clear navigation with good menus and icons to help people find their way around the site.

Set up a shipping method

If you are selling physical products, you need to have a method of ensuring that items are sent properly to your customers. There are numerous different options that you can use. It’s important to note that not all platforms will accept all methods.

Set up taxes properly
